Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes: All You Need to Know

Guilty of not cleaning your makeup brushes as often as you should be?

Let’s change it the easy way today!

It’s easy for women to invest a lot of money in makeup brushes but when it comes to cleaning them, they may think it’s unnecessary or a tricky and time-consuming process. Let’s make it clear, applying makeup on your face with a brush that’s caked in makeup is not good news for your skin. In fact, it’s a major sin in the makeup hygiene world, ladies!

Dirty makeup brushes are home to bacteria, dead skin cells, and oily makeup residue – certainly not a good combination if you’re looking to avoid breakouts and spots. Besides, cleaning your makeup brushes from time to time is essential if you want them to stay in good shape for long.

So, let’s dive in to find out how you can give your brushes a nice clean!

Three Methods of Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Here are three simple ways of cleaning your makeup brushes like a pro.

1)  The Shampoo Method

Take some hair shampoo on the palm of your hand and wet the brush bristles with water. Rub it around on your palm to work up a lather. Continue for a few minutes before rinsing the brush under a faucet. Make sure to hold your brush the handle side up because if water reaches under the metal band to where the bristles are glued in, the moisture will weaken the glue and the bristles will fall off.

Once the brush is clean, dry it off by squeezing the bristles in a clean towel. Reshape the brush and leave it to dry.

Note: You can also use liquid dish detergent to clean a dirty brush.

2)  The Detergent Bar Method

You can also use a detergent bar to clean your makeup brush. Please note that a soup bar is NOT suitable for this purpose because it’ll leave a mineral residue in the bristles of your brush. Any deodorant bath bar would work. Just don’t pick a bar that has ‘soap’ written on it or that contains sodium palmitate or tallowate.

You simply have to wet the bath bar as well as your brush. Then, rub the bristles of the brush on the bath bar for a few seconds. Once some suds are made, you can put the bar down and use your fingers to create lather on the brush. Rinse the brush well while preventing water from getting under the metal handle. Squeeze the bristles using a clean, dry towel, reshape them, and leave them to dry.

3)  The Oil Method

If your brush has loads of caked-on makeup, you can use olive oil or any mineral oil to remove it. Use your fingertips to massage some oil on the brush while trying to break the makeup residue.  You’ll see that the gummed up particles will start falling off. You may then use a dishwashing liquid to wash your brush and the oil on the bristles.

Now that you know about the easiest ways of cleaning your makeup brushes, make sure you do it every week. For extra protection, it’s recommended to store them in Plexiglass makeup organizers.
